FEATURES YOU THE STUDENT

All of our efforts have been directed toward making you, the
student, the main character in this year’s Marquette. To
emphasize your individuality, we are featuring what we feel is
the most modern senior section ever attempted by a high
school yearbook, with senior candids reflecting your vibrant
personalities. In addition, a continuous essay-type text
illustrated with photos, develops smoothly the story of the
school year at Bishop Noll Institute, the story of you the
student.

The 1966 MARQUETTE

Despite seemingly unorganized editorial board meetings and
occasional ominous groans from the advisor, the 1966
Marquette staff succeeded in producing a yearbook. The long
hours spent adding polish to the copy and pictures in the
layouts sometimes seemed unbearable. It was painful, it was an
experience, but we loved every minute of it. We think we've
really left a story with Bishop Noll—we hope it’s your story!

66] Here They Come

Nearly as varied as the students themselves is the manner in which
they come to school. Depending on the student, in his wallet can be
seen some passport for conveyance, be it South Shore ticket,
driver’s license, parking lot permit, private bus pass or the champ of
them all—the green and white Shoreline bus card. Only the lucky
fifty per cent who employ the last of the above-mentioned vehicles
know the joys of pushing, shoving, squeezing, and of course, full
buses and slammed doors.

New on the scene this year are motorbikes, parked sandwich
style between row on row of prided automobiles modeled from
1949 to 1966. Those students within walking distance of Noll
choose to make their daily trek by skipping, shuffling or
strolling through every type of shower, snow, sleet and slush.
The most unique methods of transportation can be seen on
Field Day, when hundreds of students choose to employ
bicycles and skateboards as individual vehicles.

Ml Who They Are . .

Diversity is very evident among the students at Noll. Partly
responsible for this is the wide range of family backgrounds
with nearly every race and nationality represented. There are
various shapes and sizes, from the lanky basketball player to
the muscular wrestler and from the tall slim model to the just
plain barrel of fun. Palefaces appear at Noll, but also freckled,
dark, chubby, and thin ones can be seen. On every visage, an
expression communicates the emotions of the student, usually
caused by some Noll activity.

7

Frowns, yawns, tears of happiness and disappointment,
exhilarated features, exhausted countenances, and worried
glances are all part of the scene at Bishop Noll Institute, but
the inquisitive look, the anxious look, the pensive look, and the
typical Noll smile are more familiar. As varied as Nollites are in
their backgrounds, heights, weights and facial expressions,
they are unified in their loyalty and spirit. Diversity adds the
sparkle and bubble to the typical school day at Bishop Noll
Institute.

Displaying their creativity, Noll students came to school in
hairstyles ranging from casual flips to Beatle cuts. For the boys,
longer hair, symbol of the upcoming generation, replaced the
familiar crewcut, while short, curly hair became stylish for the
girls. However, long hair remained popular, with variations
including ironed guiches to pigtails and flowing tresses to
formal curls. Yet nary a Nollite was able to control his hairstyle
when the superior forces of weather and physical education
classes were encountered.

A sampling of current fashion trends can be seen in the attire of
the Noll student. An examination of their clothing provides an
insight into the students’ likes and dislikes. Coats were the big
news on the Noll campus, as furry hoods, sheepskin or pile
lining, and big fur collars were welcome protection against
wintry winds. Benchwarmers, parkas and ski jackets remained
popular and colorful. With warmer weather came trench coats,
pullovers and suede jackets.

During rainy weather, coats of every style and color lent a
brightness to the drab mornings. Underneath the coats, girls
usually wore uniforms, however, on “dress up” days, colorful
styles were dominant. Bright plaid jumpers and v-neck sweaters
were seen as always, but the more daring Nollites chose
sweaters and stockings of the same pattern for the “total”
look. Casual events found Noll girls often dressed in stretch
slacks and sweatshirts or bermudas, knee socks and jackets.

Not to be outdone, Noll boys used similar ideas in their dress.
Patterned and solid sweaters of various colors were often worn,
but shirtsleeves and sport coats were also prevalent.
Brightening dark suits and jackets on dress occasions were
paisley ties and silk pocket squares. Velour shirts and vests
were also popular. The liveliness, vitality and originality that
Nollites display in their dress is but one indication of the
creativity of the Noll student.

17

The individuality of the Nollite’s taste is also evident in his
footwear. Loafers, hush puppies and many other fairly
conservative styles of flat shoes and boots may be seen on a
typical school day. However, his footwear may be as varied as
his extra-curricular activities. Nollites are seen in high heels at
the formal dances, tennis shoes in the gym and after school,
spikes for sports, sandals for Latin banquets, and gold boots
and high button shoes for various dramatic productions.
Sockhoppers specialize in patterned knee socks and sweat
socks. But many a Noll student feels most comfortable in the
most basic style—the bare foot.

19

An everchanging array of accessories can be seen in the
corridors of Noll. From shoulder bags to clutch bags, the
individual taste of the student is evident. Diversified tastes were
also displayed by the furry mittens and jockey hats that became
so popular during the winter months. As the season changed to
spring, rain-gear dominated the scene. Umbrellas and rain hats
of every shape and color were used for protection. The various
types of pins and hair ribbons also displayed the continuous
change in taste.

The more casual accessories were evident on Field Day. Viewing
the many athletic events through round or rectangular sun¬
glasses seemed more pleasant than squinting in the sun.
Accessories worn to formal dances set the tone for the evening.
Earrings and long gloves lend a formal air to a dance. Indeed,
Nollites show an unusual creativity in their choice of a wide
range of accessories to brighten up any outfit.

22

661 Where They Go

Silence, the usual indication of a retreat, was made more
meaningful by the contrast of discussion and “hymnanny.”
Small groups gave students the opportunity to examine
problems concerning every aspect of Christian living. Bible vigil
sessions brought the word of Christ by utilizing songs and
prayers as well as sermons given by the retreat master.

Perhaps the greatest impact was felt during the Mass. Through
smaller groups, “folk” hymns, and active participation, it
created a more personal dimension and produced a unifying
experience.

24

Relieving the tensions of their academic pursuits, many Noll
students attend the traditional social affairs sponsored by
various student organizations. "A Place Called Camelot” was
the theme of the 1965 Prom. Through the efforts of the junior
class, the ballroom was transformed into King Arthur’s castle,
complete with drawbridge, armory and chandeliers. Centers of
attraction were King and Queen Paul Shreiner and Mary Lou
Bolfik. Climaxing the Homecoming week-end, couples enjoyed
the music of the Chantay’s at the annual Homecoming Dance.

27

Sea shells, native huts and fish nets created the tropical
atmosphere of a “Polynesian Paradise.” Reigning as Queen was
Carol Lee Slamkowski and as Mister Touchdown, Chuck Ellis.
Winter Formal offered an added elegance to the Christmas
season. Drifting along with the music of the Mystics amid snow
flakes and glistening evergreens, couples enjoyed "Silver
Twilight”, presented by the Student Council. It was “Cupid’s
Night Out” on Valentine’s Eve, and many Noll boys enjoyed
being taken to the annual Turnabout dance by their
sweethearts.

In addition to the formal dances, Noll students enjoyed
themselves at many a post-game sock hop or informal dance.
The Choral Club sponsored a frolicking record hop featuring
Ron Riley and the Rivieras. “Gobble-a-go-go,” sponsored by the
Mission Club, was filled with Thanksgiving spirit. The
“Monogram Mash” was a gay prelude to the tension-reliever of
them all—the semester dance, this year “The Halfway Hop.”
Indeed, such opportunity for socialization leaves no room for
boredom in BNI life.

"Sonny boy . . . ”—Bye Bye Birdie

“Bye, Bye, Birdie, we hate to see you go”, and those who saw
the spring musical agreed. Songs from the show are still
hummed and whistled in the corridors. A clever satire on many
facets of American life, the story concerned a rock and roll
singer who is drafted, and the efforts of his song-writer’s
secretary to solve her problems with the songwriter. Her
solutions disrupt the once quiet town of Sweet Apple, Ohio.
Leading roles were held by Terry Sherman, Pauline Frechette,
John Gerbas, Mary Lynn Kolas, Nancy Ozelie, Mary Niemiec and
Rich Knaver.

Conrad Birdie (John Gerbas) and Kim Macafee (Mary Lynn Kolas)—Bye
Bye Birdie

Coordinated by Brother John Clarence, the musical was directed
by Mr. Charles Breckle, with music supervised by Sr. M. Julien
and Mr. Eugene Meltzer, and choreography by Mrs. Rita Muffet.

The deep treasures of meaning stored in the conciseness of
Thornton Wilder's Our Town are usually hidden from high
school play audiences, but the direction of Mr. Breckle and
Brother John was the key that unlocked it for Noll seniors when
they presented it as their class play.

Through a simple tale of a boy and girl falling in love against a
background of New Hampshire small town life, the need to be
aware of one another and of life itself emerged as the message
of the play. Unusual in its lack of scenery and extensive use of
pantomime and lighting effects, the play demanded imagination
of its audience. Terry Sherman as the Stage Manager gave
significance to the action of the story, with “Tom Pancheri,
Kathy Nicolini, Allan LaReau, Mary Niemiec, Joe Brunner,
Marnie Ramker, and many others, too numerous to mention.”

Pauline Frechette announces Birdie arrival.

The determination that is seen in our dramatic productions is
also evident in our intra-class competitions. Field Day provides
the opportunity to strengthen class bonds by striving for a
common goal—victory. The novelty of cycling and
skateboarding to school helped set the spirit of the day.
Enthusiasm continued to build as the athletic program got
under way. Although the outcome of the day proved the Juniors
to be superior in most events, the Annual Field Day Dance
re-established the unity of spirit.

The festivity of Senior Week exemplifies the spirit of the
graduating class. Beginning their week with final exams, the
Class of ’65 concluded their scholastic endeavors at Noll—with
the realization that high school had only begun to form the
mind of a real scholar in each of them. Despite the dreariness
of Wednesday morning, the senior class picnic was held and
gay spirits helped transform the day into one of the most
memorable. Thanking God for the success of the past four years
and asking Him for His guidance in the future, the students
attended a Baccalaureate Mass on Friday. Graduation ceremonies
on Sunday climaxed the week as each student commenced a new
adventure—better prepared because of Bishop Noll.

66l What They Do

Earl Raskosky, Senior quarterback

Athletics play a very important role in the life of many a
Nollite—spectator and participator alike. Although their record
was poor, the determination of the football team was
outstanding. Led by co-captains Ellis and Edinger, the team
strived for the victories which were often denied them because
of bad breaks, an error here or there, and injuries to men like
Scheidt, Kramer and LaReau. With these men out of action, a
heavier load was placed upon the shoulders of those
who remained.

43

Linemen Micheli, Cherep, Hurley, Schloer, Pryzbyl and
Alexander gave the opposition a tremendous weight advantage,
but made up for it with determination and fight. Ellis, a constant
inspiration to his teammates, put every ounce of his energy
into each play. The backs, led by quarterbacks Raskosky and
Govert, showed aggressiveness under pressure. Czechanski
and Adamczyk displayed great speed at the halfback spots.
Furjanic and Jurasevich were also steady performers. After
this long season, some of them, namely Edinger, Cherep and
Perko had enough energy left to go out for basketball.

Intense desire, as displayed by John Cherep, plays an important role in football.

Coach Dermody sets things straight.

Although shaken up by a shifting of players in mid-season,
Noll's basketball men put their all onto the home floor and the
away-from-home floors. Seniors John Joyce, Dave Piekarczyk,
John Cherep and Jack Luberda came through with some
excellent shooting throughout the season, while juniors Tim
Chiappini and Dale Dust amazed everyone by their speed and
dexterity on the floor. Also showing promise were the
sophomores who advanced to the varsity team in the middle of
the season.

Tim Chiappini, starting junior guard.

46

Even though the season’s record was only 8-11, Coach John
Dermody led his Bishop Noll Warriors into a spectacular
showing against Washington in the East Chicago Sectional.
Promising the student body one hundred per cent effort at the
pep assembly before the game, the Warriors lived up to their
pledge, winning the admiration of all in a splendid display of
sportsmanship and determination for Bishop Noll. With
sophomores and juniors Kieras, Magdziarz, Quinn, Kundich,
Adamczyk, Chiappini and a lot of less experienced but talented
boys to back them up, hope is at a new high.

Senior guard Jack Luberda

Coach Bradtke in final preparations before B-team game.

Mr. Bradtke coaches varsity baseball as well as reserve
basketball. Faced with a definite rebuilding year, the team
finished with an unfortunate 6-16 record. Outstanding
individual team members were Jerry King, Jim Fiegle and Phil
Kokandy. Returning senior lettermen Pat Bender, Phil Buck
and juniors Paul Tworkski and Tim Chiappini appear to be
promising assets to a 1966 baseball team striving for nothing
short of an undefeated season.

51

Led by individual record breakers John Schreiner, Bill Baron
and Tom Witt, and strong relay teams, Bishop Noll’s swimmers
continued their tradition of success. Coach Gary Lutker’s crew
had the Noll sports spotlight all to themselves throughout the
season, capturing much of the glamor usually attributed to the
football and basketball teams. The season highlight was the
impressive victory over old rival T.F. South. The Noll team
broke four school and two pool records in recording a 57-36
victory over the tough Lansing team.

53

Noll sportsmen run great distances as well as swim them.
Under the direction of Mr. Archer, the newly formed
cross-country team showed streaks of great promise. Finishing
with a first season record of 7 wins and 6 losses, this new team
shows every indication of becoming a valuable asset to Noll's
already famous track department. Last year's track record
showed the varsity team displaying great power in relay and
distance events. Led by lettermen runners Tom Adamczyk,
Chuck Schafer, Mark Furman and shot putter Rich Sobolewski,
many records were broken. It is hoped that Noll’s tradition of
excellence in this field and a team of hard working cindermen
will lead the 1966 season into even greater things.

Although returning from a very successful 1965 season, Noll
grapplers constantly strived to improve their record of
undefeated matches. Co-captains Pat Bobalik and Tom Kotynski
led the team with undefeated records in the 138 and 145 lb.
classes, but often lacked support from the heavier weight
divisions. Other lower weight wrestlers who showed promise for
future teams included Leo Gonzalez, 95 lb., Frank Lowry, 112
lb., and Mike Gallagher, 120 lb. The entire team contributed its
strength and experience towards brightening up the 1966
wrestling season.

Although the golf team was in a rebuilding process, it ended the
season with a respectable 14-7 record. Under the direction of
Coach Karl Huffine, the linksmen finished strong in each of
their tournaments. Centered around returning veterans Don
Cvitkovich and Ken Cook, first year members Rusty Kochis,
Wally Tatara and future star, John Kieras rounded out the 1965
squad. A big disappointment was the one-stroke loss to
Hammond High in the Hammond City Tournament. With the
same squad returning next year, the outlook for the 1966
season is very promising.

Religion classes, the center of the academic world at Noll, took
on a new light this year in accordance with the Church’s
“aggiornamento.” While exploring everything from the
mysteries of the Old Testament to liturgical reforms, the young
Christian was given every opportunity to voice his opinion on
modern moral values and attitudes. Discussions were
supplemented by films concerning the challenges of Christian
living. Through periodic Masses with his religion class and
consultations with the spiritual director, each student received
individual guidance in his religious beliefs.

61

Striving for the understanding of literature, language and
dramatics, Noll English classes examine the literary works of
cultures from Greece to Russia in addition to contemporary
novels made available through the paperback library. The
emphasis of this year’s courses was on several films, readings,
and the production of four one-act plays and cuttings for
instruction in dramatic techniques, as well as the usual
rudiments of grammar, proper speech and the differences in
literary cultures.

Through courses in history, sociology, government, geography
and economics, the student is introduced to the challenging
importance of social studies. By the identification and
exposition of modern historical and sociological values, critical
thinking is developed. Facts are presented and analyzed
through the participation of students in heated class
discussions. The fascinating story of man unfolds as each
student begins to realize the true principles of democratic
ideals manifested in his own enthusiasm, idealism and loyalty.

65

Everything from freshman geometry to senior calculus is
included in Nolls’ program of the revolutionary “new math.”
Fine math laboratories equipped with everything from overhead
projectors and oversize slide rules to three dimensional conic
sections and colored transparencies are a great aid in
visualizing theories. Used extensively this year, team teaching
proved successful by exposing students to various viewpoints.
Even trigonometric functions and binomial expansions seemed
to come alive to the student interested in mathematics.

67

With the emphasis on experimentation, the science classes
were very appealing to the student’s spirit of discovery. Noll’s
fine laboratories and teaching aids were beneficial to the
students who probed the mysteries of plant and animal life in
biology, the various compounds formulated in chemistry, and
the fields of electricity and magnetism in physics. The well
qualified instructors who composed the Science Department
staff brought about a better understanding of the physical world.

Supervised by Brother Leo and Sister Ivan, Noll’s business
course gives the student a valuable background in office
proficiency. The students are taught the skills needed in order
to compete and succeed in the business world. The ability to
operate calculators, mimeograph machines, adding machines
and typewriters proves beneficial to the interested student. The
responsibility of mimeographing the Daily Bulletin, absentee list
and other bulletins is given to the business students who thus
serve the school while developing individual skills.

70

Expression is the keynote of Noll’s fine arts classes. Students
learning how art can express ideas fill the art room with color,
curiosity and enthusiasm. They study, they experiment, and
they brighten our school with their works. Filling the choral
room with the sound of music while studying symphonies,
comparing jazz styles and preparing programs, the music
classes learn the intricacies of musical variations from Bach to
Bernstein. With the finer arts comes an awareness for aesthetic
values and higher stratas of culture.

73

The development of domestic and mechanical skills in the
student by providing factual knowledge and practical
experience is the purpose of the home economics and
mechanical drawing courses. Basic principles of homemaking
are taught to freshmen girls while the sophomores explore
various methods of nutritional food preparation. Mastery of
sewing techniques is the goal of juniors while seniors complete
the course with a study of food patterns and actual cooking
experience. Mechanical drawing classes offer boys an
introduction to the development of architectural skills and
machinery design.

74

To make and keep students healthy and fit is the purpose of
Noll’s physical education classes. The instructors use the gym
and pool facilities to provide a varied program. Swimming,
basketball, wrestling, volleyball and softball are but a few of the
sports offered, as well as daily drills in basic calisthenics. Also
included in this program are classes in health and safety in
which sound attitudes of physical fitness are developed.

Vice-President Jack Crawford

Composed of student-elected officers and representatives, the
Student Council did much to promote active participation in
school functions. Through his representative, the student
became better acquainted with the administrative segment of
school life. Besides representing the entire student body, the
Student Council sponsored various activities, promoted school
spirit, and maintained discipline. Studying governmental
systems and discussing current events is the purpose of the
Political Science Club. Both organizations helped bring the
understanding of government closer to student life.

Understanding the challenges of Christian womanhood is the
objective of Sigma Kappa Gamma. Monthly breakfast meetings
are held after Mass featuring discussions and guest speakers.
Assisting the priest at all religious functions and serving daily
Mass at St. Margaret Mary are the responsibilities of the Noll
Acolytes. The Mission Club has been successful in helping the
needy and making Nollites aware of their obligations to others.

Under the direction of Sr. Angeline, weekly collections,
Christmas baskets and the Mardi Gras give the Noll students
opportunities to display their generosity.

Realizing that learning a language means more than struggle
with grammar and translation, Noll language clubs give each
student a chance to explore cultural background. The Latin
Club held a December Saturnalia, replete with banquet and
chariot races, as well as several films, slides and discussions.

A better understanding of the culturally rich country of France
is promoted by the French Club through such activities as its
Christmas party, movies and filmstrips. Through field trips and
displays, Spanish Club members examine Spanish-speaking
countries and their customs.

One outlet for students interested in using their classroom
knowledge of science is the BNI Experimental Science Club.
Through guest lectures, field trips and club experiments,
members find practical applications of science. For those
preparing for medical and technological professions there is the
Medical Careers Club while for those intrigued by practical
problems or abstract theories of mathematics and logic, there
is the newly organized Math Seminar and Chess Club. Each of
these clubs helps students progress in individual scientific
achievement.

Quill and Scroll Officers Mary Niemiec, Rich Bloch,

To increase their skill in journalism and record the many
activities involving the school, students can serve on the
staff of Noll’s publications. Our newspaper, the Journoll, has
won awards for its excellence, and the staff members gain
invaluable experience. Photographic as well as writing skills can
be developed through work on the yearbook. Acting as a link
between the school and the area press is the Noll News Service.
High journalistic achievement in any of these activities may be
rewarded with membership in the International Quill and Scroll
Society.

Finishing up on final deadline are yearbook staff

Serving as ushers for athletic events are members of the
Monogram Club. These letter winners are chosen on the basis of
athletic achievement. This year several members of the Girls'
Athletic Association also earned letters for outstanding
achievement in various G.A.A. events. Terri Bighart, Georgene
Horvath, Ellen Stribiak and Linda Verbish merited this
distinction. Setting the new state record for the 440 yard relay,
Deanna Reiplinger, Mary Luberda, Georgene Horvath and Linda
Verbish were noteworthy examples of Noll’s consistent records
of excellence.

Other participants of Noll’s athletic program included the
cheerleaders and Booster Club. Practicing with determination
and dedication, the girls strive to promote that vitally needed
yet intangible school spirit. Under the direction of the late Mrs.
Petro, the Booster Yell Block helped Noll win the sectional
sportsmanship trophy last year. Sponsored by Mrs. Cook this
year, the club hopes to help Noll retain the award. Noll’s varsity
cheerleaders were Carol Lee Slamkowski, Gwen Croom, Diane
Wilczynski, Yvonne Linders, Karen Holland and Sue Wachel.

A wonderful weekend of sports activity commenced with the
first event of homecoming. The senior skit was a clever spoof of
Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The parade, routed through
downtown Hammond, was composed of class floats, the queen’s
float and forty decorated cars. Carol Lee Slamkowski and her
court, consisting of Diane Wilczynski, Pat Sell, Ginger Yatsko
and Kathy Peifer, reigned in a “Polynesian Paradise” the
following evening. The announcement of Mr. Touchdown,
Charles Ellis, climaxed not only the dance, but a memorable
weekend as well.

Through participation in competitive oratorical events,
members of the Speech and Debate Club gain proficiency in
public speaking and dramatic interpretation. Outlets for musical
and artistic talent are offered by the Choral Club, Band, and Art
Club. Various choruses and bands give every student with a flair
for music the opportunity to develop individual talent, as well as
providing entertainment for various school functions. Art Club
members provide displays for the school as well as develop
individual mastery of artistic methods.

Art club members Mark Toth and Kathy Karp prepare Christmas display.

Nollites interested in preparing for future professions have a
choice of career clubs. Those looking forward to a career in
teaching learn of the many challenges, hardships and rewards
that this profession entails through the Future Teachers of
America. Training for the business world introduced in the
various business classes is increased by participation in the
Business Education Club. The Future Secretaries of America,
under the direction of local secretaries, offers practical
suggestions and experience in preparation for this career.

Setting tables, serving dinners, and ushering are but a few of
the many activities of the Service Club girls under the direction
of Mrs. Reichart. Officers Mary Rose Kozlowski, Kathy Vargo
and Sherry Finneran help plan club events including the annual
Turnabout dance. Service in scholastic and extracurricular
activities is also a vital factor for membership in the National
Honor Society. Officers Charles Schafer, Sue Vrane, Cheryl
Haviar and Pat Natale, under the direction of Mr. Smith, plan
the annual Book Fair and Talent Show.

ADMINISTRATION

Through the endeavors of Bishop Andrew G. Grutka, programs
have been initated to expand the facilities of Noll to
accommodate a maximum enrollment of thirty-two hundred
students. His sincerity and interest in our affairs has contributed
much to the advancement of higher learning at Noll.

Serving in the capacity of Superintendent, Brother I. Conrad
has, since 1962, directed the administrative policies of Bishop
Noll Institute. Due to his influence the school has reached an
outstanding level of academic achievement.

ADMINISTRATION

Preserving the individuality of each student in
a school as large as Bishop Noll is one of the
aims of our administration. This is accom¬
plished by careful schedule planning and indi¬
vidual guidance, both spiritual and scholastic.
The members of Noll’s administration believe
that discipline balanced with advice is the key
to the better understanding of each Nollite.
